Smile for Kids
2/02/13
Summary:
Smile for Kids was an opportunity that I will never forget. I feel so blessed to have been able to help all those children in great need for dental care that day. When the children arrived at the school, they were welcomed greatly. They first went into a classroom where they were educated about eating healthy and how to brush their teeth. They then came into the radiology room, where we took the necessary amount of radiographs for the treatment that they needed to have done. They then were walked over to the clinic, where they had their teeth cleaned and if needed they would then walk over and get any necessary treatment done. Our class, as well as a handful of the junior class was dispersed in each section of the treatment given that day. I was placed in the radiology room where I met, developed and took radiographs. I loved being able to meet these children and help them through these wonderful services. I also was lucky to be one of the first people to see them that morning and was able to welcome them, make them feel comfortable and give them the help they needed. For almost half of the children I saw that morning it was their first visit to the dentist. Some kids were scared, happy, crying you name it. It was an awesome experience to learn how to work with these children and be there for them.
Reflection:
I was very pleased I attended this event and was able to help so many children in need for these services. I look forward to doing this again in the future. I learned that you always have to be on your toes and ready for whatever may come your way. Some people may be happy, or mad they are seeing you, but no matter what you welcome them and help them with their needs. I also learned how important it is to work as a team. It was like being in a dental office, where everyone should be working to help the other out. This day showed how much and how great of a team our class is. The entire day ran smoothly and we had each other’s back the whole way through.
